For those of us that suffer from back pain it is a constant battle to find the time in our busy schedules to do the proper back stretching exercises that are vital to keep the muscles stretched, not only as we begin our day but also at times when we can feel that sharp pain in our back that is telling us to do a few simple back exercises or possibly face the consequence of further injury.

Stretches that help to loosen the back muscles do not always need to be performed while in full exercise gear or with the aid of gym quality exercise equipment. Easy stretching techniques that can be performed in just 5 minutes or less can be the answer that you need to get through the day. These simple exercises I have learned from going through two bouts of herniated disc problems myself while at physical therapy. I was amazed at how in only a few minutes time I was able to feel much better and hope they help you out too.

#1 Stand with Hands on Hips

You should perform this lower back stretch once an hour. Those of us that sit for extended periods can benefit in about one minutes time. Start by standing up with your feet about shoulder width apart for balance. Place both hands just above your hips and slowly bend backwards while still keeping your balance. Hold this position for about 10 seconds and return to the starting position. Repeat 3 times.

#2 Stable Chair Stretch

I personally love this stretch as it gives me a very stable and comfortable position in which to exercise. Find a chair that does not have any type of wheels, casters, or anything that could make the chair move away from you as it will be the stable point in which you are placing some of your weight for balance. The chair must also have a high back for grasping purposes. With the back of the chair facing you standing about 2 feet away from the chair and feet shoulder width apart, slowly lean towards the chair and grasp the top of the back. Now slowly arch your back as far as you comfortably can and hold for 10 seconds returning to the starting position. Then while still holding onto the chair, slowly dip your right shoulder blade towards the floor. You should be feeling a mid back stretch on the side you are dipping. Hold for 10 seconds and return. Repeat the same action with your opposite shoulder blade. Repeat this entire process 2-3 times.

#3 Arm Raise

Talk about some simple back exercises here is one that everyone can do in less than a minute. While standing shoulder width apart raise both arms above you head and grasp your fingers together. Stretch your arms straight up as far as they will go without causing any pain. Hold for 10 seconds and return. Then while still holding your arms up lean towards the left without bending your hips. Hold for 10 seconds and return. Repeat same action to the right side.

Now that was easy. Three simple back exercises all in under 5 minutes with time to spare. I perform these on an every day basis with great results. A lot of other people in the office have started to perform these too. I hope they can help you out with some stiff muscles during the hectic day.

These 3 simple back exercises are only a start. Why suffer from back pain or annoying stiffness if you do not have to? I found a great source that can help you expand on these exercises to help get rid of back pain at: http://BackPainReliefPlan.com.

Lower back and hip pain is perhaps the most draining of health issues preventing you from undertaking many of the things you want to do.

Undoubtedly one of the more common yet misunderstood medical conditions suffered by a lot of people is back and hip pain.

Because there is generally no outside physical symptoms of the problem it is often an extremely tough problem to diagnose. This short article will take a look at two key areas of lower back and hip pain:

* sciatica and
* herniated disc.

When you consider the real stresses and strains many of us put on the lower back and also the hips it’s obvious why so many of us suffer from lower back and hip discomfort. Even the very simple action of walking stresses these areas. When our feet strike the ground the impact of this action is transported to the hips and lower back. If we were perfectly put together then this would not generally lead to any kind of issues. However, very few of us can make this claim and such things as flat feet or one leg being just a bit longer compared to the other or even perhaps you have a small curvature of the spine could cause additional stresses on the back and hips that might lead to back and hip problems.

Some of these complaints can often be remedied quite simply. For instance, flat feet can be remedied utilizing orthotics; in cases like this you would need to visit a podiatrist. As you can see some lower back pain causes can be simple to treat while some others like for example sciatica are harder.

WHAT IS SCIATICA?

Just what actually is sciatica? In a nut-shell it is pinching of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve stretches from your feet to the end of your spine. The main issue when this nerve is pinched is to have the condition accurately clinically determined.

Because the sciatic nerve is considered the longest nerve in your body, stretching from your spine to the feet. the trouble could be anywhere between the bottom of the backbone and your feet. This means you could experience pains any place in that area, even in a foot. There have been occasions where sciatica has become confounded with pulling a hamstring muscle and because stretching a hamstring can potentially further worsen the sciatica, it is very important for the problem to be correctly identified.

Treatments for sciatica are usually maintaining a good posture, cease running, if you are into running for exercise, and to get a physician’s advice. Sometimes the reasons may not be serious even so it pays to seek medical advice in case what caused the sciatica is something serious, like, for example, a degenerated disc.

WHAT IS HERNIATED DISC?

Another issue is herniated disc. Although it is feasible to have a herniated disc any place in your spine it’s most commonly seen in the lower back. Herniated disc causes are usually a result of growing older and the disc essentially wearing out or is caused by a spinal injury when tiny cracks and tears permit fluid from inside the disc to be forced out to the external part of the disc causing it to bulge and sometimes even break.

Herniated disc signs in the lower back are typically pain and numbness or some weakness in that section of the body. If the herniated disc applies pressure on a nerve, this can also be a cause of sciatica. However, if it does not put pressure on a nerve then you would generally have a backache.

Herniated disc diagnosis will most likely necessitate tests such as a scan or an MRI and for that reason it is important if you have symptoms to consult your doctor.

Both of these conditions can be quite debilitating and cause a lot of pain and discomfort and disruption to everyday life.

If you have been suffering from back pain for years without getting any relief from traditional remedies, it might be time to start looking for a new and more effective back pain system of treatment. Conventional remedies include the use of ice packs, orally taken pain relievers, and good old-fashioned bed rest. When these methods fail to give sufficient relief, more drastic approaches become necessary such as physical therapy, acupuncture and even surgery.

The problem with these traditional treatments is that while they may work, it usually takes up to several months before any positive results are seen. Fortunately, new back pain systems of treatment have been developed in recent years that allow people to get quicker and long-lasting relief.

Oftentimes, people feel that they have no other choice but to go into surgery to get rid of recurrent problems. However, that isn’t always the case. For instance, sciatica will eventually resolve itself over time, regardless of whether you undergo surgery or not. Other types of back pain may also go away after undergoing different treatments that are far less invasive than surgery.

Finding Pain Relief

Another highly recommended new back pain system is spinal decompression, which is used for people who are experiencing a lot of pain due to misplaced disc material in their spinal column. The process of spinal decompression is done by using suction to realign the misplaced disc, as well as to promote better blood circulation in the injured area. Most individuals who undergo this treatment report experiencing complete relief within just two or three weeks, whereas it can take up to several months with traditional back pain systems.

One of the newest and probably the most controversial system that are becoming popular today is the use of Botox. More commonly known for its cosmetic applications, Botox is now fast becoming one of the leading alternative treatments for back pain because of its ability to numb the pain in the area. However, there is no indication that Botox can be an effective long-term treatment. In fact, health experts are still highly cynical of its regular use to numb pain.

Natural Pain Treatment

The use of homeopathic treatments and natural supplements for the elimination of back, joint and muscle pain is not an entirely new concept, but it has become considerably more popular in the last few years. In fact, surveys have clearly shown that natural treatment methods and products are more preferred by back pain sufferers today instead of traditional artificial medications and treatments. It is certainly a safe and painless treatment and has no terrible side effects or consequences. One that is definitely worth a try before more serious treatments.

Charles Moore provides the information and resources on many treatments, including Eazol a natural pain reliever made from all natural ingredients.

After another hard day you want nothing more than a good night’s sleep. Having to suffer from back pain at night not only deprives you of the rest your body needs but can also cause further health issues than what you are currently experiencing. Such things as sciatica or lower back pain during rest periods could be your body telling you about the early signs of a possible herniated disc or spinal issues that a medical professional needs to check out.

There are certain things that you can do to help prevent waking up with a stiff or sore back which are easily implemented without having to change your sleeping habits or buy any more of those magical back pain relievers that are sold on the television. Try these 3 back pain tips for a week or so and see if they help.

#1 First of all make sure you have a pillow that supports your neck when you sleep. To have the neck in what is called a “neutral” position is vital for proper support and less stress put on the entire length of the spinal cord. Since you should be getting about eight hours of sleep every night it would be to your best advantage to have your neck supported correctly.

#2 Proper sleeping position is one of the first things you are taught if you have ever had to go to physical therapy or a back specialist. The best position to sleep is one where you are lying on your side in a fetal position which places your entire spine in a “neutral” position. Make sure your legs are slightly bent at the knees and you can even place a small pillow for support between your knees if it makes you more comfortable.

#3 Most people do not think of this as being important but this tip can save you a lot of pain. When you are sleeping and have the need to get up during the night to go to the bathroom or when you are getting out of bed in the morning, do not just jump out of bed. Since you should already be lying on your side from sleeping use the opposite hand and place it on the bed next to you. Then easily push up using the bed as a support. As you slowly lift yourself to a sitting position swing you legs down towards the floor in unison with sitting up. This prevents major pressure on your spine especially when it has been at rest for eight hours.

These 3 tips for back pain at night should be able to help relieve some of the pressure put on your back when it should be getting rested up for the next day. Having a rested and relaxed spine in the morning is key to starting the busy day out on the right foot. By discovering some simple techniques can also save you some doctor visits in the future.

These 3 back pain at night tips are only a start. Why suffer from pain if you do not have to? I found a great source that can help you expand on these exercises to help get rid of back pain at: http://BackPainReliefPlan.com.

Myth: The Fort Collins Chiropractic Treatments are painful

For the most part, there is no pain associated with the chiropractic treatments. It has even been said to feel like a massage. People, who have been fighting with pain in their necks or backs, could feel a bit of discomfort, however over time the care become more comfortable and soothing.

Most of the adults enjoy going to have the treatments from chiropractors. These treatments for infants and kids can also be without pain, even though they can be a bit scared at first.

The treatment takes about a half to a full hour, the exact length of time depends on what problem is being treated, and which areas are affected. People could feel some slight pain and discomfort dependent upon how severe the problem is, and of course the person’s pain tolerance.

Myth: There is Danger in Chiropractic

Chiropractic is not dangerous. In fact the kind of treatments given are thought to be among the safer of the treatments for back and neck pains, along with other conditions. There is a low risk of having issues due to the spine getting adjusted. A lot of doctors recommend spinal manipulation first before a recommendation for surgery. This alternative therapy is also suggested before prescribing antidepressants and steroids.

Myth: Compared to Doctors Chiropractors are Less Qualified

Chiropractors have to have extensive education and training to be able to practice. The courses are quite similar to courses doctors have to take, with the exception of pharmacology and surgery. Chiropractors have to go to school from 2 – 4 years just for the undergraduate, then another 4 – 5 years for chiropractic school.

These professionals then are fully qualified with knowledge of radiology, pathology, differential diagnosis, biomechanics, techniques in chiropractic adjustments, physiology along with certain health conditions. There are the national and state board examinations to go through for licensing. All chiropractic doctors are required to do continuing education too.

Myth: The Chiropractic Cost Too Much

Chiropractic is quite reasonably priced on top of being effective. It can be a lot less pricey than getting medical treatments such as prescriptions taken for the long haul or surgery. Patients getting chiropractic treatment cost less than other health care treatments, medications, and inpatient visits.

The sessions for evaluating the person’s condition can also be cheap and quick. People usually just have to go to the chiropractor several times a year at most, depending on their condition. After a patient finishes a whole program of treatment, they are allowed to either have more treatments or visits periodically.

Programs for preventative treatments are offered too to assist patients alleviate neck, back and spine conditions so no serious interventions are needed.

These days, people are spending more and more time in front of their computer. The vast majority of people spend their entire work day sitting at their desk and only move when they go to lunch or get a paper from the printer. All this sitting eventually causes your lower back to become stiff and sometimes painful.

The Advantages of Standing
You can force your body to do more work by using a standing desk. In this way, you are less prone to having a bad posture as long as you do not lean on the desk for support. Also, it is much easier to go for a quick walk, stretch your legs or simply get some motion going in those hips. This will get more blood flowing in your muscles and will keep you alert for longer.

An Adjustable Desk
Even better than a standing desk is a desk which you can adjust between standing and sitting. This allows you to change your working position several times a day. This is good since your legs might not be used to standing for long periods. If your legs get tired, simply adjust your desk to the sitting position and give your feet a rest. Varying your position several times a day might get your colleagues looking but it is worth it when they complain about their sore backs later in the day.

Conclusion
Basically, the human body was not meant to sit all day. Therefore, any reason you can find to move your body during the day helps. Standing rather than sitting is one thing that has worked for me and I really recommend that you try it.

Sciatica is a very painful condition that affects many people. Some people complain of tingling and/or numbness in their lower back, buttocks, or leg. Other people have shooting pain that radiates down from the base of their spine all the way to their toes.

The good news is that it is fairly easy to relieve the pain. The bad news is that unless you go further and treat the underlying conditions that led to your sciatica, your pain will most likely return.

Obviously, if you are suffering from these types of symptoms, sciatic pain relief is first and foremost on your mind. In order to effectively treat your sciatica symptoms, you need to follow a three step process.

Three Steps To Sciatic Pain Relief

Step 1: Identify the Cause Of Your Sciatica Pain

First, it is important to identify what is causing your sciatica. For this part, it is very important to go see a doctor. All sciatica pain is the result of compression somewhere along your sciatic nerve. The problem is that this nerve runs all the way from the base of your spine, through you hips and buttocks, and down each leg. Most of the time the compression occurs in one or two locations. You’ll need your doctor’s assistance to determine where.

Step 2: Treat the Pain

Next, your doctor will help you treat the pain. Your doctor may prescribe pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs. You might also need to do a few stretches to loosen up the affected area. Depending on your condition, your doctor will probably also recommend rest, cold/heat therapy, and possibly physical therapy.

Step 3: Treat the Underlying Causes Of The Pain

Unfortunately, most doctors and chiropractors will never get to this step with you. They focus on treating the pain, but never get around to identifying and treating all the imbalances and physical dysfunctions that caused the pain in the first place.

Many people assume that if you fix the pain, you’ve also fixed the problem. But this is untrue. Left alone, more than likely your sciatica pain will return. The next time it returns, it may be accompanied by even worse symptoms.

The Key To Lasting Sciatic Pain Relief

If your car is out of alignment, you can drive it for a while but you know a big repair bill is just on the horizon. The same is true for your body. As we go through life, it is quite common to develop various physical dysfunctions and muscle imbalances. These are a natural result of how we live our lives, how we sit at work, and our general habits and posture.

Over time, these imbalances slowly warp our body, pulling our spines, hips, and muscles out of alignment, thereby creating stress and strain that will develop into other conditions.

Muscle imbalances develop slowly over time. Most people have one or two and don’t even know about it. Sooner or later you need to take care of them before more severe problems develop. These same muscle imbalances are the root cause of most forms of sciatica as well as most forms of back pain. This is the key to understanding sciatica and finding lasting sciatic pain relief.

Take control of your sciatica. Learn how to identify and correct your muscle imbalances and find lasting sciatic pain relief. For more information, visit http://sciaticpainrelief.org

In this article today I want to discuss several different methods to help you beat back pain without resorting to expensive and painful surgeries.

When you come right down to it, four out of every five Americans are likely to develop some sort of lower back pain sometime during the course of their natural lives. I played basketball in high school and had several nasty spills over the course of my short career and even in to my mid-20s I began having back pain that was considerable; so this subject really hits home with me.

First of all I should mention that back pain will usually go away on its own within about two days or 48 hours. The problem is, nobody wants to live with that searing pain for a single minute, let alone 48 entire hours or more!

The first thing you can do is use cold to reduce the pain. Many people are confused about whether to use cold or hot but cold is the proper way to start out with because it will curb the swelling and inflammation. There are many different methods to use cold, some of which include putting ice cubes in a bag or something like that. Personally I like to use bags of frozen vegetables like peas or corn because I can sculpt them around my back for the most comfort.

If your back pain continues past 48 hours than you may want to switch from cold to hot because the heat will dilate the blood vessels which should help boost your circulation and get nutrients to the damaged tissues quicker. Of course if your back pain persists after 48 hours you may want to talk to a doctor anyway.

Normally bedrest is the best thing for back pain but recently we’ve discovered that there is some fitness exercises that you can do of an aerobic nature that may help speed along the recovery time.

The best is a back extension where you basically lie on your stomach with your hands flat on the floor by your chest and then sort of press up so your chest and back arch slightly. Your hips are going to want to remain flat on the ground while the rest of you arches upward. Try to hold this for about 10 seconds and repeat it several times.

In addition to simple aerobic exercise, massage can help as well in certain circumstances. Massage is good for the obvious reason but it’s also good because it raises the levels of endorphins in your body and endorphins are your body’s natural painkillers. They just make you feel good. Your husband or wife can massage you but it’s even better if you use a professional massage therapist because they really know what they’re doing.

So there you have several very simple methods to help fight back pain without resorting to expensive surgeries. Some of them may work better for you than others so it’s important to mix and match until you find the right ones for you and your back.

J.P. Morton runs a wall mounted pot rack web site where he also reviews the best calphalon pot rack for your kitchen. He has been an article writer online for well over 10 years and also enjoys rock climbing and white water rafting.

A backache is something everyone will experience in his or her life. The pain can be so severe nothing seems to relieve it. Luckily, most backaches are minor and have no residual effects. However, they can be a warning sign of something more sinister. Generally, a backache with no other symptoms is a normal part of living. Knowing a few things about what to look for will help differentiate between a normal pain and something more serious.

• Fever- A sign of infection. Seek medical attention.
• Burning during urination -Burning during urination or inability to urinate can be a sign of infection or mass. Seek medical attention.
• Nausea or vomiting- Seek medical attention.
• Recurring- nocturnal back pain- Seek medical attention.
• Backache that does not go away- If the pain persist longer than two or three days seek medical attention.
• Trauma- Seek medical attention.

If the pain does not present with the above symptoms, chances are good it is a common backache. One of many things can cause a common a backache. Soft tissue spasms, such as muscle, tendons, and ligaments will cause pain if overworked. Nerve impingement from bony structures will inflame nerves causing pain. Left to itself the common backache will subside in a few days. However, some things will help a common backache subside quicker. Contrary to popular belief, bed rest does not relieve a backache sooner. Too much bed rest could actually aggravate the pain and make it last longer.

Muscle strain is the most common cause. Repetitive or strenuous activity can cause back pain. As will weak abdominal muscles, if a “Potbelly” is present, reduction of belly fat will be beneficial. Strengthening stomach muscles leads to less strain on the lower back. Performing stomach exercises, such as setups and crunches, strengthens the muscles and supports the back. Stomach exercises are more a preventive rather than a curative measure. However, the lack of pain will be noticeable after a few weeks.

Inactivity precipitates back pain. Lying in bed longer than normal or leading a sedentary life is often a reason for low back pain. The remedy for inactivity is exercise.

If someone is experiencing a backache, he will be the last to say it is common. Unless accompanied by other symptoms, there is a good chance its normal. With a little preventive exercise, and paying attention to what the body is saying, suffering will be minimal.

If a health care professional has recommended bed rest for low back problems or sciatica, you may discover that your pain actually worsens if you follow this advice. Or at best, there may be no change at all in your condition.

Another common treatment that includes the use of over-the-counter or prescription pain killers may relieve symptoms, but poses serious risks in terms of side effects and a tendency for abuse.

Numerous studies have concluded that the best treatment for back pain is a combination of continued movement and chiropractic care. The results of these research studies include:

* The Manga Report, from the University of Ottawa, Canada, concluded that chiropractic care for low back pain was shown to be more effective in terms of results, cost and safety than medical management. It also ranked higher in terms of patient satisfaction.

* UK Clinical Standards Advisory Group, in its criticism of traditional back pain treatment in Britain, reported that bed rest could be responsible for more serious long-term problems. It also reported that 95% of those with back pain could be treated by a chiropractor when pain lasted three days or longer.

* US Federal Agency for Health Care that agreed with its UK counterpart, suggesting that acute low back pain could best be treated with mild exercise, such as walking, and that chiropractic adjustments could relieve pain, especially when given within a month of the onset of pain.

* RAND Corporation Study looked at more than 1600 patients with acute low back pain over a two-year period. Its conclusions? That those who received chiropractic care improved considerably faster than those treated with medicine. And pain relief with chiropractic adjustments was faster than with exercise and the use of physiotherapy and pain relievers.

So, the next time you think of going to bed for a few days to ease the pain in your lower back, think again and make an appointment to come in for an evaluation. And let your friends and family know that study after study proves that gentle, all-natural chiropractic care is safe and effective for back pain and many other conditions.

Call to arrange a consultation today and find out if you’re a good candidate for today’s chiropractic care!
