The quality and the cost of medical care depend more on you than on your doctor.
To become a wise medical consumer, start with three basic principles:

* Work in partnership with your doctor and health care team.
* Share in every medical decision.
* Become skilled at obtaining medical care.

By following these three principles, you will gain more control over the quality and cost of your health care than you have ever had before.

Work in Partnership With Your Doctor

Good partnerships are based on a common goal, shared effort, and good communication. If you and your doctor can make these things happen, you will both gain from the partnership. You will get better care and your doctor will practice good medicine.

Five Ways to Be a Good Partner

1. Take good care of yourself. Both you and your doctor would prefer that you don’t get sick in the first place. And if problems arise, you both want a return to good health as soon as possible.

2. At the first sign of a health problem, observe and record your symptoms. Your record of symptoms will help both you and your doctor make an accurate diagnosis. And the better job you do recording early symptoms, the better you and your doctor can manage the problem later.

- Keep written notes on the symptoms. Record when, how long, how painful, etc., for each symptom.

- Note anything unusual that might be related to the problem.

- Measure and record vital signs.

- Add regular updates and watch your progress. Are your symptoms getting better or worse?

3. Practice medical self-care at home. As the front-line partner, you can manage a lot of minor health problems on your own. Read health guidelines book, your own experience, and help from others to create a self-care plan.

- Learn all you can about the problem.

- Keep notes on your self-care plan and what you do.

- Note whether home treatment seems to help.

- Set a time to call a health professional if the problem continues

4. Prepare for office visits. Most medical appointments are scheduled for only 10 to 15 minutes. The better organized you are, the more value you can get from the visit.

- Prepare an Ask-the-Doctor Checklist

- Update and bring your list of symptoms and your self-care plan.

- Write down your main concern (chief complaint) and practice describing it. Your doctor will want to hear that first.

- Write down your hunches or fears about what is wrong. These are often helpful to your doctor.

- Write down the three questions you want answered the most. (There may not be time to ask a long list of questions.)

- Bring along a list of the medications you are taking.

5. Play an active role in the medical visit.

- State your main concern, describe your symptoms, and share your hunches and fears.

- Be honest and straightforward. Don’t hold anything back because of embarrassment. If you don’t intend to fill a prescription, say so. If you are getting alternative treatment such as acupuncture or chiropractic treatments, let your doctor know. To be a good partner, your doctor has to know what is going on.

- If your doctor prescribes a drug, test, or treatment, get more information.

- Take notes. Write down the diagnosis, the treatment and follow-up plan, and what you can do at home. Then read it back to the doctor to be sure you have it right.

If you can’t prevent a problem altogether, the next best thing is to discover it early, when it is easy to treat. Here are Ten ways you should do to stay healthy.

Immunize. Immunizations are the best bargain in health care. When you immunize, you prevent illness for your family and help prevent epidemics in your community. Follow this link for Immunization recomendations

Keep Moving. Any way you define it, fitness is essential to good health. Even moderate exercise makes a huge difference both in how you feel and what illnesses you get.

Eat Right. Eating a well-balanced, low-fat diet of wholesome foods will keep you energetic and free of many illnesses. Consider breast-feeding your baby to help keep him or her in the best health.

Control stress. Even with a hectic and hurried lifestyle, you can prevent stress from undermining your health.

Be smoke-free. Smokers who quit gain tremendous health benefits. So do people who avoid secondhand smoke.

Avoid drugs and excess alcohol. When you say “no” to drugs and limit what you drink, you prevent accidents and illnesses and avoid a lot of problems for yourself and your family.

Put safety first. Safety at home, at work, and at play; safe driving; firearm safety; and safe sex will all help keep you healthy.

Pursue healthy pleasures. Take naps, relax during meals, play with kids, care for a pet – they all can add to your health.

Think well of yourself. A good self-image is the foundation of good health.

Promote peace. Peace on earth begins at home. Seek nonviolent ways of resolving conflicts at home, at school , at work, and in your community.

The 2008 election has brought the topic of “affordable health care” and “affordable health insurance” to the forefront and, along with it, a slew of misconceptions. So, what is true and what is false? The purpose of the following article is to dispel some of these myths and misconceptions and provide information to make a muddy topic a bit clearer.

1. The first misconception is that, for some reason, Americans equate affordable health care to be “socialized medicine.”

This is not the case at all. According to Wiktionary, socialized medicine is “an umbrella term for any system of government-run health care.” Many people balk at the idea of socialized medicine because the citizens inevitably pick up the costs through higher taxes. Affordable health care, on the other hand, is as simple as the phrase states – it is health care with costs low enough for everyone to afford. The government does not necessarily oversee it and individuals are free to go to physicians of their choice. It is not discriminatory to those with lower incomes and services are equal whether one is poor or financially privileged.

2. Another misconception is that the current total of uninsured Americans is not as high as many journalists and polls report, and that this is a relevant fact that points to the lack of necessity for affordable health care.

The Kaiser Family Foundation even stated that their numbers include those who have been without insurance for two years or more. The Congressional Budget Office also said that just under half of those lacking health insurance will be without coverage for less than four months, due to being in between jobs. These numbers beg the following question, however: What about those who have something catastrophic occur within those four months that they are without insurance? Without adequate coverage, their medical bills could potentially lead to major hardships.

3. A third misconception is that the only people without health insurance are those who are poor.

This is simply not true. Americans of all income levels are without health insurance. In fact, at least half of all bankruptcies in the United States are due to medical bills. Because individuals are already paying high premiums due to not having affordable health care, when medical bills begin to accumulate, Americans are unable to pay both the premium costs as well as the mounting medical bills. And with the unemployment rate rising, more people are falling into the category of being without health insurance. Whether they are losing the insurance that came with the job they lost, or whether they are unable to continue paying the premiums due to a lack of income, the rate of uninsured Americans is on the rise.

As illustrated above, the need for affordable health care and insurance has become more crucial than ever. The current economic crisis, along with job losses being on the rise, could lead to detrimental effects on the health of Americans. Affordable health care would offer a safety net for both minor and major medical issues.

The Affordable Health Insurance Network (www.AffordableHealthInsurance.NET) is a network of researchers, journalists, and contributors that supply and document relevant content about the health care industry.

Posts Related to Misconceptions About Affordable Health Care

Many Americans Cannot Afford Health Benefits

Many people today take health insurance coverage for granted; there are many people who do not even have coverage.

There have been many modern advances in the world of health care, and research has unlocked many mysteries when it comes to medicine. One of the areas that has seen some advances is the treatment of substance abuse, where professionals are learning how best to treat individuals addicted to drugs or alcohol. But still today, the number of lives affected by drug abuse and alcoholism is increasing, and many people have turned to prescription opiate such as hydrocodone or oxycodone, and it really hasn’t gotten much easier to help those people get sober. It is still a long, hard process that often lasts a lifetime.

Drug detox, and particularly opiate detox, can be a very scary and difficult thing. The reality is that no matter what method they choose, drug addicts still have to go through it if they are going to be sober. A few modern techniques have been designed to make the process easier, however.

Naltrexone

First of all, there is Naltrexone. This drug is an opiate antagonist, which means it blocks the drug user from feeling any effects from heroin or oxycodone or other opiate, so that they become unappealing to them. With this method the patient is given a Naltrexone implant by injection, and then the person is forced to withdraw. Some medicines can help a little with the pain of withdrawal, but since the implant lasts 6 months, the person will not find any relief from going back to opiate.

Anesthesia-assisted Rapid Detox

Another method that has been developed more recently is the anesthesia-assisted rapid detox, where the patient is put under general anesthesia while given Naltrexone. The idea is that when they wake up, the patient will have been through the most difficult part of detox and can feel well enough to stay away from the drugs. Some people have found with anesthesia-assisted rapid detox that the benefits aren’t that great, that the person still has symptoms of withdrawal after they wake up, and that there are some serious side effects to using anesthesia, including pulmonary and psychiatric complications.

Buprenorphine

Another way people are making it through detox is to take buprenorphine, which regulates the clearing of opiate from the brain. This drug is a replacement drug for the opiate, and while it is supposed to be used to wean a person more slowly from drugs, the truth is that many people become stuck using buprenorphine for the rest of their lives.

Acupuncture

Other modern methods that are sometimes used are things like acupuncture and electrostimulation to manage the pain. While some people firmly believe these methods help to alleviate withdrawal symptoms, there have been few studies that actually show this works.

All of these methods are actually just the beginning of a drug addict’s journey to become sober. Following the physical opiate detox will be weeks, months, or years of therapy to keep from turning back to drugs. But with the right help, it certainly can be done.
